Manufahi's Climate Change Hazard

Manufahi's Climate Change Hazard Profile Workshop

Manufahi's Climate Change Hazard

On 20 November 2023, WaterAid Timor-Leste’s team in cooperation with Manufahi Municipal Administration, SMASA Manufahi, and our partner Luta ba Futuru organized the Manufahi Climate Change Hazard Profile in the Administration Municipal Hall.

The principal objectives of the workshop are to discuss and develop the climate change hazard profile related to the key component of climate change hazard that affects WASH services and water resources, identify the frequency, intensify, and impact of climate change hazard, provide WASH profile to the relevant Government actors, and share climate change hazard information to the community leaders and relevant institutions as their reference to the future program approach (e.g. women and mitigation perspective and climate change).

This activity began with the Intervention session from Manufahi SMASA’s Director, WATL Program Manager, District Commander, and the Administrator of Manufahi municipality. It was followed by the contextual update session by the APC Commander, SMASA Director, and Daisua’s Chief of Village. Furthermore, a presentation session from the National Director of Education Centre and Environmental Information regarding Manufahi’s climate condition and WATL’s Consultant presented the Climate Change Hazard Profile and continued to the group discussion and presentation using the world café method based on climate change hazard type such as Meteorological, Climatological, Hydrological, Geophysical, and Biological.

During all processes of the workshop participants from the key sectors of the Government, territorial delegation, community authorities, municipal authorities, NGOs, and international agencies completed the information for the climate change hazard profile template. This activity helped to identify the factors supporting the changes mainly coming from the community practices that against environmental protection. Another finding is that the type and subtypes of climate change hazards started to happen in Manufahi in these last five years like warmer temperatures, landslides, and natural disasters happened this year that made the Manufahi municipality declare calamity as it impacted the WASH sector and devastating damages to the infrastructure, plantation, and threatened people’s life.
